Why Your Doctor May Not Prescribe Your Usual Medicines

The Integrated Commissioners Board (ICB) is responsible for buying health services on behalf of people in Sheffield, including medicines provided on prescription.

We need to make sure we get the best value for NHS resources and that patients get the most effective care and treatment.

In Sheffield, we currently spend over £3 million a year on medicines that are widely available to buy over the counter without a prescription and a further £300,000 on expensive branded medicines where a non-branded product would have been available at a much lower cost.

Please see the following leaflet and poster for more information.

Prescription Fees

Help with NHS costs

In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:

  • those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
  • those who are age exempt
  • those with certain medical conditions
  • More information is available at NHS Choices

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

Medication Reviews

Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see clinician at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip. Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.

If you fail to attend for a medication review, this could result in your next prescription being given at a reduced quantity.

Community Pharmacist Information

Useful information about your community pharmacist

Some useful information to consider before contacting your GP about the Sheffield Minor Ailments Scheme and access to medicines that can be bought over the counter.

Sheffield Minor Ailments Scheme

Your community pharmacist is a highly trained healthcare professional who can provide expert, confidential advice on common illnesses and provide effective over the counter medicines to treat them.

The cost to the NHS of prescribing medications that can be purchased inexpensively over the counter is enormous. For that reason, paracetamol, cold remedies, muscle rubs, vitamin and mineral supplements such as vitamin D, and hay fever medication are no longer prescribed by your GP.
